The Strongest Currencies in the World, Ranked

Summary Box:

The strongest or the highest currency in the world usually means the currency that has the highest value when compared with the US dollar. Generally, if 1 unit of a currency buys more US dollars than 1 unit of any other currency, it is considered stronger by this measure. As per a Forbes report, dated August 12, 2026, the Kuwaiti dinar ranks first on this basis, followed by the Bahraini dinar and Omani rial.

Most Forex traders know that the US dollar dominates global Forex trading. But do you know it is not the world’s highest currency? Yes, several currencies rank above it, with the Kuwaiti dinar, Bahraini dinar, and Omani rial leading the list.

Read this article to know about the complete list of the top 10 highest currencies in the world (based on the exchange rate prevailing on August 12, 2026).

Top 10 Most Expensive Currencies in the World 2026

Note that the term “most expensive” refers only to the value of one unit against the US dollar. Based on exchange rates on August 12, 2026, the Kuwaiti dinar, Bahraini dinar, and Omani rial ranked among the top three.

To gain more clarity, let’s check out a complete list of the highest currencies in the world (list compiled by referring to a Forbes article, dated August 12, 2026):

1. Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD)

As of August 12, 2026, the Kuwaiti dinar is the most expensive currency, with:

and

Kuwait potentially generates a large share of its wealth from oil exports, which bring substantial foreign-currency earnings into the country.

2. Bahraini Dinar (BHD)

The Bahraini dinar ranks second in the list of the world’s highest currencies, with 1 BHD worth about US$2.65 on August 12, 2026. In the opposite direction, US$1 was worth around 0.37 BHD.

As per general market understanding, Bahrain differs from some other Gulf economies as its economy has a large non-oil component. In 2024, the non-oil sector accounted for 85.9% of its real GDP. Note that the Bahraini dinar was introduced in 1965 and is pegged to the US dollar.

Due to such “pegging”, its exchange rate is maintained at a fixed level against the dollar rather than being left to move freely with market demand.

3. Omani Rial (OMR)

The Omani rial ranks third, with 1 OMR worth about US$2.60 and US$1 equivalent to roughly 0.38 OMR on August 12, 2026. The rial was introduced in the 1970s, and Oman’s economy has historically received substantial income from oil and gas exports.

Oman is located on the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, next to the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

4. Jordanian Dinar (JOD)

The Jordanian dinar ranks fourth in the list of the highest currencies in the world, with 1 JOD worth about US$1.41. In the opposite direction, US$1 buys around 0.70 JOD. The currency has been in circulation since the 1950s.

Unlike several Gulf economies, Jordan is not heavily dependent on oil and gas exports. The country has faced relatively slow economic growth and rising debt.

5. British Pound (GBP)

The British pound sterling is the fifth-highest currency in the world, with £1 worth about US$1.35. Conversely, US$1 buys around £0.73. Sterling has a long history dating back to the 15th century, while the UK moved to a decimal currency system in 1971.

Unlike a currency such as the Gibraltar pound (explained below), the British pound has its own exchange rate and trades in global Forex markets based on market conditions.

6. Gibraltar Pound (GIP)

The Gibraltar pound ranks sixth and has a special relationship with the British pound. It was introduced in the 1920s and is pegged to sterling at a fixed rate. Due to such pegging, the Gibraltar pound maintains a one-to-one value with the British pound. Thus, any changes in the value of GBP are reflected in GIP.

Note that Gibraltar is located at the southern tip of Spain and is a British Overseas Territory. For a Forex beginner, the important point is that GIP does not move independently of GBP in the same way that freely traded currencies can.

7. Swiss Franc (CHF)

The Swiss franc (introduced in 1850) is the official currency of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As per general industry understanding, it is viewed as a safe-haven currency and is currently ranked seventh in the list of the highest currencies in the world

Potentially, several traders prefer it during periods of political or economic uncertainty, as Switzerland has a reputation for political and financial stability. At the stated exchange rate (prevailing on August 12, 2026), 1 CHF was worth about US$1.23, while US$1 bought around 0.81 CHF.

8. Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD)

The Cayman Islands dollar is the currency of the Cayman Islands, a British territory in the Caribbean. The currency was introduced in the 1970s and is pegged to the US dollar. Its value is maintained at a fixed exchange rate against USD rather than being allowed to move freely like many major currencies.

At the exchange rate (prevailing on August 12, 2026), 1 KYD was worth about US$1.20, while US$1 was worth around 0.83 KYD.

9. Euro (EUR)

The euro is the official currency of the Eurozone, the group of 20 European Union countries that use the euro. Euro notes and coins entered circulation in 2002.

At the exchange rate (prevailing on August 12, 2026), €1 was worth about US$1.15, while US$1 bought around €0.86. For a Forex trader, EUR/USD is a major currency pair, which reflects the relative strength of the Euro against the US dollar.

10. US Dollar (USD)

The US dollar ranks tenth in the list of the highest currencies in the world and is the world’s most traded currency. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) reported in its 2025 Triennial Central Bank Survey that the US dollar was on one side of 89.2% of all foreign-exchange trades in April 2025.

Additionally, USD is the largest reserve currency held by central banks. In a recent study, the IMF reported that the US dollar accounted for 56.77% of global foreign-exchange reserves in Q4 2025, compared with 20.25% for the euro. Besides, it is also widely used to price major commodities such as oil, gold, and copper.
