SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) is the “statutory regulator” of India’s securities market. Primarily, it regulates market intermediaries (such as stockbrokers and mutual funds) and works toward investor protection. Besides, some additional duties of SEBI are:

  • Preventing unfair market practices, such as insider trading and market manipulation.
  • Promoting market development and maintaining its integrity.
  • Setting disclosure requirements for companies raising funds from the public.

Additionally, SEBI’s “Saarthi” app provides investor education resources and offers access to “SEBI Check”, which allows investors to verify bank-account details and UPI IDs of SEBI-registered brokers and other intermediaries before making payments.

Who is a SEBI-Registered Broker?

A SEBI-registered broker is authorised by the SEBI to provide brokerage and related services in the securities market, such as:

  • Allowing investors to buy and sell shares on stock exchanges

or

  • Opening and maintaining trading accounts
