Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

An economic moat is a durable competitive advantage that may potentially protect a company’s market position and profitability from its competitors. As per general market understanding, some common sources of an economic moat are:

  • Brand Dtrength: Customers may prefer an established brand over alternatives.
  • Network Effects: A product or service becomes more valuable as its user base grows.
  • Cost Advantage: A company can produce or deliver products at a lower cost than its competitors.
  • Switching Costs: Customers may incur high costs or difficulties when changing providers.
  • Intangible Assets: Patents, licenses, proprietary technology, or other protected assets can restrict competition.

What is “Moat” in Investing?

While performing stock analysis, several investors specifically search for “economic moats” that may offer a durable competitive advantage. Such moats can support:

  • Market share
  • Pricing power
  • Profit margins, and
  • Returns on capital

However, a moat is not permanent. Technology, regulation, consumer preferences, and new competitors can weaken an existing competitive advantage.
