A forex forward contract is a “private agreement” between two parties to exchange a specified amount of one currency for another at a predetermined exchange rate on a specified future date.
Unlike a spot transaction, where currencies are exchanged near the current market rate, a forward contract fixes the exchange rate today for a transaction that will occur later. For example:
| Feature | Forward Contract | Currency Futures |
| Trading Venue | OTC, privately negotiated | Exchange-traded |
| Contract Terms | Customisable | Standardised |
| Counterparty | Usually, a bank or financial institution | Clearing corporation through the exchange |
| Settlement | Usually on an agreed date | Exchange-defined expiry and settlement mechanism |
| Margin | Depends on agreement | Margin is generally required |
| Liquidity | Depends on counterparties | Generally, more standardised and transparent |
| Counterparty Risk | Relatively higher | Reduced through central clearing |
