What is Volatility in Trading?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

Volatility measures how significantly and frequently the price of an asset changes over a given period. Higher volatility means prices are experiencing larger or more frequent movements, while lower volatility generally indicates smaller price fluctuations.

How to Trade in Volatile Markets?

In volatile markets, larger and more frequent price movements can increase both the potential gains and losses from a trade. Traders may therefore consider reducing position size so that a sudden adverse price movement does not result in an excessive loss. They may also:

  • Set predefined risk limits to determine the maximum acceptable loss before entering a trade.
  • Account for wider spreads and slippage
  • Avoid excessive leverage as it can magnify losses when prices move sharply.
  • Use suitable stop-loss levels and do not place them arbitrarily close to the entry price.
  • Regularly monitor liquidity, as “lower liquidity” can make it harder to enter or exit larger positions at the desired price.
