The Average Directional Index (ADX) is a technical indicator used to measure the strength of a price trend. It is commonly calculated using a 14-period setting and is accompanied by two directional indicators:
| Directional Indicator I – “+DI” | Directional Indicator II – “-DI” |
| Measures upward directional movement. | Measures downward directional movement. |
Note that ADX may potentially measure the strength of the trend. However, it does not indicate whether the trend is bullish or bearish by itself. A commonly used interpretation made while using the ADX indicator is:
| ADX Level | General Interpretation |
| Below 20 | Weak or absent trend |
| 20 to 25 | Trend strength may be developing |
| Above 25 | Stronger trend conditions |
| Above 40 | Very strong trend conditions |
ADX can be combined with “+DI” and “−DI” to assess both trend direction and strength.
For more clarity, let’s check out different scenarios:
| Scenario I: “+DI above -DI” (+) rising ADX | Scenario II: “-DI above +DI” (+) rising ADX | Scenario III: Low ADX |
| Upward directional movement with increasing trend strength. | Downward directional movement with increasing trend strength. | Downward directional movement with increasing trend strength. |
ADX can let you analyse trend strength when used with “+DI” and “-DI”. Trade246 gives you access to similar 100+ technical indicators on advanced TradingView charts. Use them to study trend strength alongside price movements.
