What is the NSE?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

NSE (National Stock Exchange of India) is a stock exchange where securities such as equity shares, equity derivatives, ETFs, and other permitted assets are traded. NSE began operations in the equity market in 1994 and uses an electronic trading system.

For an investor, NSE provides the marketplace where buy and sell orders are matched according to the exchange’s trading rules. Realise that NSE trading is different from a broker.

  • A broker only provides access to the exchange, while NSE operates the exchange itself.
