What is Gold Trading in India?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

Gold trading in India refers to buying and selling “gold-related” financial contracts (instead of physical gold). In India, investors and traders can trade gold through commodity derivatives (via gold futures and options) on Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX).

Generally, the value of these contracts changes with gold prices. For those unaware, the domestic prices of gold prevailing in India can be influenced by several factors, such as:

  • International gold prices
  • The rupee-dollar exchange rate
  • Interest rates, and
  • Global demand

Note: MCX contracts also have specific lot sizes, expiry dates, and margin requirements.

How to Invest in Gold in India?

There are several ways to invest in gold, depending on whether you want to own the physical metal or gain exposure to its price. The three common methods are:

  • Investors can purchase physical gold, such as jewellery, coins or bars.
  • Another route is to gain exposure through “gold derivatives”, where the investment is linked to gold prices without owning the physical metal.
  • Investors can also consider Gold ETFs, which track domestic gold prices and are traded on stock exchanges.
