What is FOMO in Trading?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

In trading, FOMO represents the “fear of missing out” on a potentially profitable market move. It is the psychological pressure that forces traders to enter a position “impulsively”, believing they are missing out on a potentially profitable opportunity.

This fear usually leads traders to ignore their established strategies and take excessive risks. FOMO is particularly prevalent in volatile markets, where traders may see others profiting and feel pressured to act quickly. In most cases, FOMO leads to late entries at unfavourable prices.

For example,

  • Suppose a stock moves from ₹500 to ₹550 within a short period.
  • Now, seeing the price rise, a trader may buy at ₹550 without assessing the original trading setup, valuation, risk, or potential entry level.
  • The decision is driven by the fear of missing the move rather than a predefined trading process.

How to Avoid FOMO While Trading?

Firstly, accept that not every market move needs to be captured. To prevent an impulsive entry, traders may set:

  • A predefined entry criterion
  • The maximum acceptable entry price
  • Determine the ideal position size, and
  • Check their personal risk appetite

Additionally, it is also important to distinguish a “missed trade” from a “bad trade”. Realise that missing an opportunity does not automatically create a reason to enter the market later.
