SENSEX (or Sensitive Index) is the benchmark stock market index of BSE (BSE Ltd.). It tracks the 30 largest, established, and financially sound companies listed on BSE, subject to the index’s selection criteria.
The index was introduced in 1986 (with its historical base going back to 1978–79) and is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation method. SENSEX is widely used as a broad indicator of how major Indian stocks are performing.
Sensex and Nifty are two major benchmark indices of the Indian stock market. The primary difference is the stock exchange they represent and the number of companies they track.
