What is a Bear Market?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

A bear market is a period in which market prices experience a “sustained decline”, with selling pressure generally dominating buying activity. As per SEBI, a bear market is a weak or falling market characterised by the dominance of sellers.

During such periods, investors may face declining portfolio values, increased uncertainty, and higher price fluctuations.

How to Invest in Bear Market India?

Investing during a bear market requires greater attention to valuation and business fundamentals. During such market phases, investors may potentially consider the following:

  • Review Fundamentals: Assess revenue, earnings, debt, cash flows, and business prospects (rather than relying only on falling prices).
  • Avoid Concentration: Diversify across asset classes and sectors to reduce dependence on a single market segment.
  • Maintain Adequate Liquidity: Capital required for short-term obligations should generally not be exposed to market volatility.
  • Consider Valuation: A lower share price does not automatically make a stock attractive. Valuation should be assessed relative to its earnings, growth prospects, and risks.
