Currency correlation measures the statistical relationship between the movements of two currency pairs. As per general market understanding, the correlation coefficient generally ranges from -1 to +1.

Let’s understand what positive and negative currency correlation indicate:

Currency Correlation: +1Currency Correlation: 0Currency Correlation: -1
Indicates that the two pairs move in the same direction.Shows that there is no linear relationship in the measured data.Indicates that the two pairs tend to move in opposite directions.

For example,

  • EUR/USD and GBP/USD may show “positive correlation”.
  • That’s because both pairs have the US dollar as the quote currency and can respond similarly to broad USD movements.

However, the relationship is not fixed. It can change with the measurement period, market conditions, monetary policy, and other factors.

How Do Traders Perform Currency Correlation Trading?

Several traders analyse “correlation” to first assess their portfolio concentration and then hedge relationships. Usually,

  • Taking positions in two positively correlated pairs can increase exposure to the same underlying market factor.
  • In comparison, positions in negatively correlated pairs may partially offset one another, although the hedge is not guaranteed.

Therefore, correlation is largely treated as a historical statistical relationship. It is not a trading signal or causal relationship.
