FII refers to Foreign Institutional Investors, while DII refers to Domestic Institutional Investors. In the current Indian market reporting, foreign activity is commonly reported as FPI (Foreign Portfolio Investor) activity.
FII/FPI and DII flow data show the value of purchases and sales by these institutional categories. Generally, NSE publishes FII/FPI and DII trading activity, including “net values”. (Source: NSE India)
NSE’s daily data can be used to examine institutional buying and selling activity. A positive net value indicates that purchases exceeded sales for the reported category, while a negative net value indicates that sales exceeded purchases.
Let’s understand better:
| Institutional Flow | Interpretation |
| FII/FPI Net Buying | Foreign institutional purchases exceed sales |
| FII/FPI Net Selling | Foreign institutional sales exceed purchases |
| DII Net Buying | Domestic institutional purchases exceed sales |
| DII Net Selling | Domestic institutional sales exceed purchases |
FII/FPI and DII flow provide information about institutional activity. Traders can combine it with price action, volume, derivatives data, sector performance, and other factors for a deeper market analysis.
