 What are Exotic Currency Pairs?

Learn more about important trading and financial terms here. Need more help? Our team is ready.

Exotic currency pairs combine one major currency with the currency of an emerging or smaller economy. Some common exotic forex pairs examples are:

  • USD/INR: U.S. Dollar / Indian Rupee
  • USD/TRY: U.S. Dollar / Turkish Lira
  • USD/ZAR: U.S. Dollar / South African Rand
  • USD/MXN: U.S. Dollar / Mexican Peso

Note that the term “exotic” does not mean that the currency itself is unusual or rare. It only refers to currencies that have lower trading volumes and less liquidity than the major currencies. Consequently, exotic pairs can have wider spreads and greater price volatility than major pairs.
